The languages of the Arabs in Mirqat al-Mafatih by al-Qari (d. 1014 AH A study of the phonetic level
Abstract
Arabs have been interested in phonetic studies for a long time, and the first roots of this aspect were primarily religious aspects. It began with their interest in the Holy Quran and its readings, and their interest in the articulation points of letters. The first to establish this science in our Arab heritage was Al-Khalil bin Ahmed Al-Farahidi (170 AH), with his dictionary (Al-Ain), which he built on a phonetic basis, and a group of Arab scholars followed him. As for the importance of the study in the phonetic aspect, it is represented in that studying the articulation points of letters contributes to knowing all the phonetic elements of a single sound that distinguish it from others, in addition to its characteristics, such as voicing and whispering, intensity and softness, emphasis and softening, strength and weakness, and the effects of these characteristics on the formation of various linguistic and dialectal phenomena, and in deducing the causes that cause them.Modern linguists believe that phonetics is the cornerstone of any linguistic study, and some of them have even called for prioritizing phonetic studies over grammatical and morphological studies, as they consider phonetics to be a primary starting point for the student to understand the secrets and specificities of the language, thus forming correct scientific studies.
