Abstract

The Arab critical scene has witnessed a range of methodologies and critical movements that have sought to study and analyze literary works, aiming to uncover the aesthetic qualities of both form and content. This diversity and variety emerged to fulfill the purpose of criticism in keeping pace with the ever-evolving trajectory of literature. Criticism, as an intellectual process, is inherently dynamic and fluid. Ecocriticism, in its contemporary paths, belongs to the paradigm of postmodern thought. Initially, it emerged through scattered studies, gradually developing into a burgeoning critical field, responding to the call for environmental preservation and sustainability, Its goal is to reveal the relationship between the environment and literature. In this study, we seek to outline the fundamental principles behind its emergence, clarify its conceptual boundaries, and examine its procedural criteria, particularly in light of its engagement with the human sciences and its intersections with other critical methods and approaches. This research will trace the origins of ecocriticism in both Western and Arab contexts, explore its core concepts, elucidate its most widely-used criteria, and highlight the directions that have granted it a distinguished significance in contemporary critical studies.
