Scribes and their Role in the Hittite Kingdom 1400-1207. BC
Abstract
The Profession of Scribe was one of the Important Professions in the Countries of the Ancient Near East, Especially in the Ancient Hittite Kingdom, as the Scribe came in the Highest job Ranks there, and this Position was Sometimes held by Princes Because Knowledge of Reading and Writing is Necessary to Assume high Positions in the Kingdom, and Families who Inherited the Profession Became Famous in this Position, and it had its Role for several Generations in the Kingdom, and these People used Several Languages in Writing, Including the Akkadian Language, Which was the Language of Diplomacy, that is, the Language of Communication Between the Countries of the Ancient Near East during this period, along with the Luwian Language, which was the Language of Communication with the Countries of the West of the Kingdom. They used cuneiform writing alongside hieroglyphics, and for this reason we find that the writer and the job of writing in the scroll were among the basic jobs in the Hittite Kingdom.
